  • Read through the presentation on Edgar Allan Poe and “The Black Cat” for list of Gothic characteristics and elements
  • Read through the presentation on Male and Female Gothic
  • Pay particular attention to the questions about point of view, assumptions about the supernatural, horror, terror, and plot
  • Choose either Poe’s “The Black Cat” or Hawthorne’s “The Birth-Mark”
  • Using the presentation as a guide, write a paragraph explaining why you would characterize the story you’ve chosen as Male or Female Gothic. Be sure to give specific examples.
  • Note: Male and Female Gothic may be regarded as points on a spectrum rather than an either/or choice.

Part 3.

This final part is requiring you to watch the first 20 minutes of the show Prohibition, Episode 1: “A Nation of Drunkards,” and then you have to draw connections between Poe’s “The Black Cat” and the documentary? How does the film change the way you read the story?

This episode can be accessed on a lot of different sites and I will add extra to the tip if you have to pay for it just make sure you let me know right away if you need to purchase the episode.
