The Quiet American:

1. In The Global Cold War (p. 397), Odd Arne Westad asserts that the “tragedy of Cold War history” was the following: both superpowers used colonial methods to bring “cultural, demographic, and ecological change,” while employing military power to “defeat those who resisted.” The methods for imposing change were based on what anthropologist James C. Scott calls, “`the belief in linear progress, absolute truths, and rational planning of ideal social orders under standardized conditions of knowledge and production.’” (Here, by the way, Westad quotes the anthropologist James C. Scott.)

2. Should The Quiet American be regarded as a critique of American power at a specific time and place in the Cold War, or that and something more? If so, what? Justify your claims with specific examples from the novel, and thoughtful analysis in support of your arguments.

3. How does Alden Pyle in The Quiet American exemplify Westad’s claim?
