There were four philosophies in the 19th century that changed the way human services were delivered:

  • Individualism: hard work was the road to success and poverty was a sign of spiritual weakness.
  • Laissez-faire: an economic concept that focused on societal, rather than individual, responsibility.
  • Social Darwinism: any attempts to help the less fortunate would impede progress and facilitate the survival of the “unfit.”
  • Government Intervention: the government was responsible for the care of its citizens.

Write 3-4 paragraphs answering the following questions:

  • Which of these philosophies do you agree with most and why?
  • How do you think these policies have affected the way that we treat the less fortunate?
