According to Module 1 lecture, crime “is contextual.” Criminal harm takes different forms depending on the (1) Historical period, (2) Specific context, (3) Social setting, (4) Location, or (5) Situation… in which it occurs.

Please think of a crime/criminal behavior (that is CURRENTLY considered a crime by legal definition) that may have not been a crime on the past, may not be a crime in specific context, may not be a crime in a specific social setting, may not be a crime in one geographic location vs. another, and/or may not be a crime in certain situations. Please explain and/or argue your points. Your chosen crime doesn’t need to fit ALL five indicators above, but try to get as many as you can in your explanation.

Also, according to your Module 1 lecture, there are two major theoretical perspectives regarding how the public feels about crime: consensus vs. conflict.

Please think of a crime/criminal behavior that you believe most or all American citizens agree should be a ‘crime’ by legal definition (consensus). Please explain why you chose this crime as an agreeable one. On the other hand, please think of a crime/criminal behavior that you believe is disagreed upon by American citizens (as far as its legal definition goes). Please explain why you think that not everyone agrees upon this behavior being defined as ‘criminal.”
