Explain why having a diverse workforce can provide competitive advantages for an organization, and discuss some of the policies and practices that a company can undertake to better recruit and manage a diverse workforce. What challenges does an organization face in managing a diverse workforce?

A diverse workforce offers competitive advantages for businesses across the globe in so many ways. It leads to better ideas for creative and innovative ways to develop new products and improve services. Higher productivity and employee retention is another reason. Plus, what better way to satisfy your customers than understanding what they need by having a diverse workforce.

There are a few policies or practices that organizations can utilize to obtain and manage a diverse workforce. Intertwining it into their brand not only tells their consumers that they are non-discriminative. It signifies that all people are welcomed regardless of cultural differences, race, gender, or creed. Sponsoring, holding fundraisers, or donating to charities for causes that embrace the company’s outlook brings about public awareness.

Providing ways for people to connect whether at social events or company web portals also helps maintain diverse workforces. People that are like-minded generally feel more comfortable being together or communicating regularly. Firms that understand this dynamic force can reap the benefits of decreased employee turnover and boost production levels. It also helps speed and quality of service because employees feel acceptance amongst peers.

Lastly, thinking outside the box when hiring talent. Some of the best employees are not going to come from the best Ivy league school. For example, I once heard of a phlebotomist that was one of the best at the St. Francis hospital. The lady was once a heroine addict and so she knew how to inject needles. After she got cleaned, she went to school and she used her skill from her bad habit to be used for something good.

There are some challenges that organizations may face managing diverse workforces. Cultural or language barriers often disrupt communication and cause conflict in the workplace. Not everyone understands at the same level which leads to longer training sessions. Employees that feel isolated or disconnected because of cultural or religious views may quit which employee turnovers can be costly.

When we are talking about diversity in the workplace, we are talking more about inherent diversity; that of demographic characteristics like race, sex, and age. Rather than acquired diversity of education, experience, values, skills, and knowledge.

Now more than ever companies must think of themselves as global. Global, means a mix of cultures, varying views, tastes, and perceptions. Having a diverse workforce is good for business primarily because it provides the cultures, varying views, tastes, and perceptions of their very diverse global customer base. Having a diverse workforce means your company has a diverse mindset.

When attracting a more diverse workforce. (Ideal.2018) First, a company should consider writing their job post more carefully to attract more diverse candidates. Words like ambitious or dominate may be less appealing to female applicants, for example. Second, would be to have policies workforce organizations in place that are appealing to a diverse candidate. Within the cellphone industry, WOW – “Women of Wireless” is a dedicated group to assist women in the industry to progress. The use of personality test during the hiring process can help a company understand whether the applicant is of a culturally open mindset that will be conducive to diverse workforce.Next, the use of multiple recruitment sourcing methods. Men have traditionally used sites like LinkedIn whereas women tend to rely on their own networks and rely on third party websites and online job boards, according to a report from LinkedIn.

One of the challenges organizations have when it comes to promoting people the unconscious action is to promote people we feel comfortable with. Many times that could be people that are like themselves. This challenge is met with getting comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. (Dizikes, P., & MIT News Office. 2014) When it comes to performance, diverse deliver higher performance levels than homogenous teams. Other challenges within the workplace would be combating stereotypes and discriminatory behavior, implementing diversity recruitment, and the management / analysis of inclusion efforts. Inherent diversity conflicts within the workplace can sometimes be interpersonal; requiring a great deal of time and lengthy communication to reach a common understanding. Due to the potentially emotional aspects of lowering performance and moral, must be managed carefully.
